6 people died in three districts due to lightning

Six people died in three districts due to lightning strikes. Nine people were injured. These casualties occurred on Thursday (May 2) morning.

Bengali Tribune’s Rangamati correspondent said that three people died in the district due to lightning strikes. They are – resident of Siletipara, Rangamati Sadar. Nazir (50), Baharjan Begum (55) of Baghaichhari upazila and Tanibala Tripura (37) of Longthianpara in Sajek.

Meanwhile, seven people were injured in a lightning strike at Swapan Chakma’s shop in Baradam village of Baghaichhari in the district.

Baghaichhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shirin Akhtar said that a woman named Baharjan Begum was killed by lightning while she was going out with a cow in the Muslim block village of Rupkari Union of the upazila. Apart from this, another person named Tanibala Tripura of Longthianpara in Sajek lost his life due to lightning. The families of the deceased have been given financial assistance of Tk 10,000.

Resident doctor of Rangamati General Hospital. Shaukat Akbar said that Md. was injured by lightning. A man named Nazeer was brought to the emergency department. He died before being taken to the hospital.

He also said that the family members said that the deceased Najir was sitting in the Kaptai lake with a fishing rod in the morning. At that time he was seriously injured by lightning.

Cox’s Bazar representative said that two salt workers died in Pekua in the district. They died in a separate incident in the salt field in Magnama and Rajakhali Union of Pekua Upazila in the morning.

The two deceased are – Didarul Islam (30) son of Zamir Uddin of Kodailyadia area of Ward No. 7 of Magnama Union of Upazila and Jamal Uddin son of Charipara area of Ward No. 7 of Rajakhali Union. Arafat (12).

According to local sources, when the rain started on Thursday morning, the two workers ran to the field to collect salt. At that time there was frequent lightning. At one stage, two workers died in the salt field due to lightning.

The locals rescued the two and took them to the Pekua Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.

Pekua Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Mujibur Rahman said that in the morning, the frozen bodies of two salt workers from Rajakhali and Magnama areas were brought to the hospital. But they died before being brought to the hospital.

This official also said that they died due to lightning.

Sylhet representative said, a farmer named Babul Ahmad (48) died in a lightning strike while cutting paddy in Sylhet’s Kanighat. During this time, two more farmers were seriously injured. The incident took place at Shafiq Hawar of Dighirpar East Union of Upazila around noon on Thursday (April 2).

Deceased Babul is the son of deceased Abdus Salam of Mati area of Dakshin Kuir of Kanighat.

Babul’s nephew Fahim Ahmed (17) and Babu Biswas’ son Pradeep Biswas (20) of Manikpur village were seriously injured due to lightning strikes.

Locals said that on Thursday afternoon some locals along with Babul Ahmad went to Shafiq Hawar to harvest boro paddy. They were seriously injured due to a sudden lightning strike. At that time, the people around rescued them and took them to the Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty there declared Babul Ahmad dead. The two who suffered burns were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Local UP chairman Abdul Mumin Chowdhury said that Babul, who died in the lightning strike, was the only breadwinner in the family.
